Space Rocks
Feel like an astronaut
concept 7
by CCPT
Feel like an astronaut with this big box of over 40kg.
There are 14 Space Rocks in the box. When you pick one up, you are instantly there: on earth's moon, on that (dwarf) planet, on the surface of the sun — or at the edge of a black hole. Or simply floating in empty space.
All rocks are identical: they each have the same size and the same mass of 1kg.1
Start by lifting the earth-rock. This rock weighs 1kg, as you would expect.2
Then, pick up a rock belonging to another celestial body. The weight now pressing down on your hand is exactly what you would feel if you were standing on that celestial body, lifting that rock. For example, the 1kg moon rock weighs 170 grams, and the 1kg sun rock weighs nearly 30kg.3
The following destinations are included in the Space Rocks box:
Sun
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Moon
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Pluto
Proxima Centauri B
Sagittarius A*
(empty) space
At the event horizon of the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* — the center of the Milky Way galaxy — the weight of the rock corresponds to a weight of 2040000000000000000000kg on earth. We emulate this by firmly screwing the black hole rock into the box.
In empty space the weight of 1kg is zero. We achieve this by adding just enough helium to the rock to make it float steadily in front of you. You can put your hand under it, but you will not feel any pressure.
1 To feel like an astronaut, please accept this as a fact.
2 When we say 'weighs [X]kg', we mean the force with which the gravitational field at the surface of the earth attracts [X]kg = X * 9,81N.
3 Although the mass of the Sun is 330000 times larger than Earth's mass, the large size of the Sun reduces the gravitational effect at its surface.
